Dot MOBI Domain Name Registrations

To meet this demand, the entity that controls the universal domain name extensions, ICANN, introduced the dot MOBI domain extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it are required to comply with specific regulations. In other words, all dot MOBI websites should be designed to be opened properly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” created by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These have to do with how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The restrictions have provoked some concerns taking into consideration that the universal domain name extension is the only one that specifies what devices need to be able to access a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be built in such a way as to be viewed by most browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
